Bird Watching in the Fall From the crisp cool air to the colorful red and yellow leaves, I find myself often staring out the window. With a warm mug in hand, I pause amid my busy evening flow to take in the amusing fluttering of bird wings. Similarly, I find great delight in their beautiful vocal calls.

IT’S FOR THE BIRDS

Yes—it truly is! There’s an app that takes you to a really great tool for becoming a Community Scientist. Researchers often use platforms such as these to record data provide by you. This way they can study the migration habits and create richer data to understanding the impacts we are having on the natural world.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Firstly, download the app, it’s a great resource and game for your children also. Secondly, borrow the “Birdwatching Backpack” from the library loan program. Thirdly, create your own backpack with the items you feel would come in handily when our hiking (LINK) the trails for birdwatching in the Nicola Valley region.

BIRDWATCHING ESSENTIALS

So you’re ready to take on the birdwatching in earnest. How do you go putting together the right gear? Backpack, binoculars, books on regional species, hiking or walking trails, and provincial camping or off-road maps. Make sure to include a notebook or template to check off the markings you saw on unknown birds. The app is a great place resource for when you’re able to connect back to the gird.

Whether choosing day hikes or walking in the park after school, we find ourselves immersed in nature nearly every day. However, how often do we let it truly sink in. Canadians are so fortunate in our rich abundance of nature. Vancouver being known for Stanley Park, a stunning 21-km park in the middle of the sprawling city.

Curious, covert, or actively engaged. Which of these categories do you fall under? Merritt is home to beautiful birds such as xxxzzz.

JUNIOR BIRDWATCHERS

Schools are great places to get kids interested in the birdwatching scene. Such an easy pastime and relatively cost friendly. Certainly, a youth club could be formed, where the students could discover how their actions actively support their community. For many children, the app provides a game like quality that allows technology to be involved but is not the main focus. Win-Win for the educational community!

WINTER ACTIVITIES IN MERRITT BC

Other awesome activities at this time of year include: trail walking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sledding, curling, bowling, volleyball, open mic nights, benefits, craft fairs, dance recitals, and concerts.
